Evan W. Smith: A childhood dream fulfilled
Rooted in serving the community.
Founder and owner Evan Smith spent his early childhood on the West Side of Wilmington, where he attended Heritage and Warner Elementary Schools, and the Cab Calloway Middle School of Arts. His lower education concluded at Christ Our King School. Evan’s dream of owning a funeral business began during his sophomore year in high school when he began performing minor jobs in the industry. In 1999, he graduated from Hodgson Vo-Technical High School and went on to attend the New England Institute of Funeral Services at the Mt. Ida College in Newton, Massachusetts, just outside of Boston. He graduated summa cum laude from Mt. Ida in 2001.
Evan’s career in funeral service continued in Baltimore, Maryland at the Vaughn C. Greene Funeral Services where he became licensed in the funeral business, serving in many capacities as mortician, funeral director, and manager. During his eight years with Vaughn C. Greene, he honed his mortuary skills while never losing sight of his goal to return to his home town and establish a funeral business there.
Evan’s dream was realized in 2009 with the dedication of the Evan W. Smith Funeral Services, and the grand opening of the company’s first location at 201 N. Union Street in Wilmington the following year. Since then, Evan W. Smith Funeral Services has been the recipient of the prestigious “Best of Delaware” recognition by Delaware Today. The company opened its second location at 518 S. Bay Road in Dover, Delaware in 2016. Evan and his staff are honored to bring superior service, elegance, and matchless quality to the Wilmington and Dover communities they serve.
